EMDR Regular Sessions

Problems EMDR can help with:

  • Depression
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Addiction
  • Trauma/PTSD
  • Grief
  • Anger
  • Eating disorders
  • Bipolar disorder

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EDMR) is a type of psychotherapy which is commonly known for treating mental health conditions, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This interactive technique encourages patients to relive triggering or traumatic experiences in small doses, while the therapist directs the patient’s eye movements and using bilateral stimulation. Considered as a more unusual form of therapy, EMDR aims to divert the patient’s emotional response from reliving the trauma; aiming to make the feelings, emotions and thoughts associated with the trauma more manageable. While the patient is exposed to distressing or traumatic memories, the strong psychological response often associated with these triggers can then be reduced while the patient’s attention is focused on eye movements.

EMDR is found to be particularly effective for people who have difficulty talking or thinking about their past experiences. Although EMDR was originally considered as a treatment for Trauma and PTSD, there are also several other mental health conditions that can benefit from EMDR.

EMDR Intensives

Problems this can help with:

  • Depression
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Addiction
  • Trauma/PTSD
  • Grief
  • Anger
  • Eating disorders
  • Bipolar disorder

Intensives are longer versions of the regular sessions.

One benefit is accelerated healing, as the intensive format allows for faster results than traditional weekly sessions, which can be especially beneficial for individuals with severe symptoms or limited time to commit to ongoing therapy. Additionally, by dedicating several days to the therapy process, individuals are able to stay more focused and engaged, leading to deeper insights and more significant breakthroughs.

Multi-day EMDR intensives may also lead to better retention of treatment gains over time, as the concentrated and focused nature of the treatment allows for more effective processing and integration of traumatic memories. Comprehensive treatment plans may also be implemented during these intensives, addressing not only the traumatic memories themselves but also any related emotional, behavioral, or relational issues.

Furthermore, multi-day EMDR intensives are typically conducted in a supportive and therapeutic environment, where individuals can receive additional support and guidance from mental health professionals and peers. This can help them feel less isolated and more connected to others who have experienced similar challenges.

It's important to note that multi-day EMDR intensives may not be appropriate for everyone and individuals should work with a mental health professional to determine the best treatment approach for their unique needs and circumstances.

Ketamine Therapy

Disorders Ketamine can treat:

  • Major/Clinical Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • OCD
  • Trauma/PTSD
  • Severe Anxiety
  • Treatment-Resistant Depression

What is ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine, a legal, safe and effective medicine, is used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including Major Depressive Disorders, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Bipolar Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Severe Anxiety and Treatment-Resistant Depression. It is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help patients to actively examine, work with, and effectively process that material for long-lasting change and sustained improvement in symptoms.

It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement. Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges. Blue Lotus Wellness uses the sublingual lozenge form, however options for intramuscular injection can be administered onsite at the Awaken office.

What does a ketamine session look like?

What does a ketamine session look like?

During your medicine session, you will be laying down and will have a mask to block light as well as noise cancelling headphones in order to fully immerse yourself in the experience. The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. People can have a variety of experiences including:

• ability to access challenging states of mind with less fear

• allow inner access to difficult and often “stuck” material and emotions

• relief from obsessive and depressive states

• conscious awareness

• a sense of newness and healing afterwards

Once these effects subside, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happens during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are clear.

Functional Medicine Nutrition

Nutritional imbalances in the body can be the cause of some diseases or chronic health conditions. Using high quality nutrition can support gastrointestinal functioning, neurocognitive disorders, immune imbalances, in addition to allergies or food intolerances. Using food as medicine and ingesting an adequate amount of macro and micronutrients, can further support lowering the risk of chronic disease and increase mental clarity.

Using the Functional Medicine standards of practice for Nutrition Counseling includes a detailed history of symptoms and triggering events from the patient. Starting with a detailed health history allows the functional medicine nutrition assessment to start at the root of the underlying problems. Assessing what has happened in the past can be useful in how to move forward. Prior to the functional medicine nutrition assessment patients are required to fill out a detailed 3 day food journal to assess where diet plays into addressing concerns or symptoms present. With a full health history, nutrition intake, toxic load, personal stressors and physical health symptoms, the patient and the functional medicine nutritionist can work together to discuss food and lifestyle changes to work towards an individualized treatment plan

Often referred to as "Psychological acupressure" or "Tapping", the technique works by releasing blockages within the energy system which are the source of emotional intensity and discomfort. These blockages in our energy system, in addition to challenging us emotionally, often lead to limiting beliefs and behaviours and an inability to live life harmoniously. Resulting symptoms are either emotional and/ or physical and include lack of confidence and self esteem, feeling stuck anxious or depressed, or the emergence of compulsive and addictive behaviours.

An EFT treatment involves the use of fingertips rather than needles to tap on the end points of energy meridians that are situated just beneath the surface of the skin.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine can be described as a systems-based approach to health and wellness. An increase in chronic disease is notably associated with a decline in functioning of the body’s systems. Instead of treating only symptoms of disease, Functional Medicine views illness and disease on a continuum. This style of care is on the rise due to the current failure of our healthcare system. Functional Medicine is able to use evidence-based medicine focused on behavior modification and using food as medicine. These interventions can address the causes of complex illnesses that are instigated by genetics, environmental exposures, and modifiable lifestyle choices.

The 7 core clinical imbalances of Functional Medicine include assimilation, defense and repair, energy production, biotransformation, communication, transport and structural integrity. Using this system-based approach acknowledges the biochemistry and physiology of some illnesses or symptoms that are present. This Functional Medicine approach focuses on the root cause of disease, as one condition has many causes, as well as one cause can have many conditions. During the initial interview a fundamental history of all medical and social background is discussed. This is necessary to find out was fundamental issues the person is struggling with and what factors, events or ongoing concerns are present, these are known as antecedents, triggers, and mediators. Conventional medicine divides the systems of the bodies into specialties, but the human body is a complicated network of systems that all work together. The hope is that looking at the person as a whole, will support optimal health.
